walleye guiding details

The boat you will be fishing from is a spacious Tracker TUNDRA Fishing Team Edition with a length of 21 feet. It is very wide and stable with a beam of 8 feet. The boat is equipped with the latest safety equipment which meets or exceeds the safety requirements outlined by Transport Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard for small commercial vessels. It is powered by a environmentally friendly 250 hp Mercury OptiMax XS outboard, 9.9 Mercury Pro Kicker. For protection and comfort the boat has a full walk through windshield to provide a dry and warm ride. This boat size allows access to big water and small lakes and rivers where the ‘bite is on' and offers excellent boat control for some of the most precise walleye techniques.

Bodies of water

• Bay of Quinte - Spring and Fall trophy hunting at it's best. Only a few hours drive from the U.S. Border and Toronto, this is a excellent drive-to location. The Bay of Quinte is a world class walleye fishery that produces a large number of walleye in the 10+ pound range. My largest Bay of Quinte walleye to date is 15.9 lbs, caught November 2003. I usually guide out of the Picton and Deseronto locations, but will launch wherever the fish are.
Best Times : May, September, October and November
* If you are looking to catch a trophy walleye, book in advance as available dates for Bay of Quinte go quickly.

• Centennial Lake - An Eastern Ontario lake that is mostly surrounded by crown land. It is a great producer of walleye in the Spring and Fall. The lake is located approximately an 1 ½ hours drive from Ottawa, Ontario.
Best Times: May and October

• Mississippi Lake - Another Eastern Ontario body of water that produces a large number of walleye in the 16 to 22 inch range. The walleye in this lake are related to weeds so it is a great fishery to learn shallow walleye techniques. This lake also offers outstanding Bass and Pan-fish opportunities. The lake is located between Carleton Place and Perth, Ontario.
Best Times: June, July and August

• Ottawa River - This large river offers some great walleye and sauger opportunities. Most guided trips are on the Arnprior, Ontario section of the river.
Best Times: May and June

• Additional Opportunities - Guided fishing trips during July and August can also be arranged for Lake Trout on Big Rideau or Charleston Lakes, located in Eastern Ontario. Please inquire by email or phone about additional opportunities.

A little bit about your guide

My name is Sheldon Hatch, I have a great passion for pursuing walleye, a species that is both challenging and rewarding to catch. I would like to share some of my ‘tricks of the trade' that have been tested and proven during recreational and tournament fishing. I am a member of the National Professional Anglers Association (N.P.A.A. #928), the Ontario Sportfishing Guides' Association and have fished the Professional Walleye Trail (PWT) . I am also a State Team member for Tracker Boats, Pro-staff for G-Loomis, Fin-tech and Lowrance with sponsorship support from P-Line, Off Shore Tackle, Slide Diver, Rivington Suzuki, Yakima Bait Company, George's Marine & Sports and Shimano Reels.

Tricks of the trade

Some of the techniques you will learn while out on the water may be any or all of the following: in-line planer boards; snap and keel weights; lead-core; spinners; crank-baits; pitching jigs; vertical jigging; live bait rigging; bottom bouncing; down rigging or any other technique that places walleye in the boat. I only take one or two people out at a time and like to make the trip into an on the water educational experience. If you have any techniques or equipment you would like to learn or try, just ask when booking your trip. I have taught clients everything from deciphering sonar readouts to trolling over the top of weed growth with mini in-line planer boards. On the water education is a great way to learn.
